Trying to Catch a Train

We left the bar at 12 and hurried to get on the el. By 12:30 we realized we weren’t going to make it through two more stops, a cab ride and a run to the station by 12:40 so we threw in the towel and I decided to crash at Melissa’s. That’s when she realized we missed our stop. We got off in China Town. (“the outskirts of where white girls don’t go after midnight” as Melissa refers to it.) While we were huddling under the warm lights for the incoming train a man shuffled over and asked Melissa where she got her boots, to which Melissa replied, “we’re not interested” Finally after a little more questioning she said “downstate” He asked, “How much you pay for dem”, she replied, “not much”. He continued asking where and how much?
“Do you want me to get security?”
“Why, for talking to yas. I was gonna ask you for an auto-graph Brittany Spears”
“For being rude-we’re just trying to catch a train”

Apparently he thought it was hysterical that she told him we were trying to catch a train. He walked away repeating it several times in between chuckles. Then I think one of those under cover cop/security guys came over and sat on the bench next to us pretending to use his cell until the train came. The rest of the night was uneventful. On my train back home Sat. morning a guy handed the conductor an Amtrac ticket to Wisconsin? And I thought I had trouble with the train! J
